"Local Area Connection doesn't have a valid IP configuration"
I have a laptop with Windows 7 and while I was over a a family's residence, I was not able to connect to their network. They have a desktop pc (not sure if it has windows 7, might be the problem) that has wired connection to the DSL router and an xbox 360 that wirelessly connects. As I searched through networks via control panel I saw the name for their network and attempted to connect. It loaded saying "Looking for information about (network name)" and then a message window popped up saying that it could not connect. I tried the diagnosis options and had shut down the router and modem then started them up again as the diagnosis options requested. I did search up the previous discussions about this problem, but I didn't know if my particular circumstances might have any relativity to the problem. Also, I first tried wireless connection and then brought over an ethernet cable and the same results occurred. Thank you for any helpful information you might have! And as complicated as computers and such are, if there is any possible way to explain with layman's terms, the act would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, To troubleshoot the issue, please perform the following steps. 1. Bypass the router or switcher and connect to the DSL modem directly via wired cable for a test. Can you access Internet now? 2. Temporarily disable firewall and antivirus program. 3. Disable the NIC card and re-enable it again. 4. Assign a static IP address and DNS address to check the result. Thanks, Novak

What would be a static IP address and DNS addresss... Where would those from?
